Der Riesenmammutbaum von Treffen

In 1900, the head teacher of Treffen, Erich Steiner, planted a special tree. For that time, for example, there was no Kanzelbahn yet, a giant sequoia in this area was a true exotic. 123 years later, the tree has become a giant. In 1860, the first tree seeds came to Carinthia, but only the Treffen giant sequoia and one in Obervellach (in private ownership) survived these planting attempts. The Treffen sequoia "Sequoia Gigantea from the family Taxodiaceae, a light-loving tree species. Its roots do not reach deep, but extend meters sideways.
