Dekanatspfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt

Dekanatspfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt

Fügen, Tyrol

The church, built between 1494 and 1497 and consecrated in 1497, is located in the village center. Early Gothic frescoes on the organ loft, however, prove a much earlier building stock, probably dating back to the 9th century. The enthroned Mother of God on the left side altar (around 1450), the Entombment of Christ (around 1500) on the right side altar, and the twelve apostles in the apse date from the Late Gothic period. Under the porch of our church, above a Christ in the tomb, there is a rare terracotta depiction of the Mount of Olives scene from around 1500. Two torch-bearing henchmen in the foreground, with their squire's attire, point to the early mining activity in Fügen.
