Das Hohe Kreuz

The Hohe Kreuz (at the eastern end of Millstatt, above the federal road). The Hohe Kreuz is a religious landmark and was erected around 1520 after a fire at the collegiate church. Emperor Maximilian granted the Order of St. George Knights in Millstatt the freedom to establish a high court. The Hohe Kreuz would therefore have been located at the Burgfriedgrenze (boundary of the castle's jurisdiction) and on the way to the Halsgericht (court of capital punishment). Since that time, this wayside shrine has also been called "Arme-Sünder-Kreuz" (Poor Sinner's Cross). At the beginning of the 17th century (around 1620), the baroque frescoes were presumably created as a second painting. The paintings are attributed to Viktor and Jakob Kazner from Villach. The back is also interesting: a carved figure of Christ carrying the cross with a painted landscape.
