Numerous houses display valuable late Baroque facade paintings, commonly known as "Lüftlmalerei". The fresco paintings indicate the great prosperity of those seasonal workers and itinerant traders who achieved considerable wealth abroad. Many Holzgau residents found employment in Holland as stucco workers, masons, plasterers, carpenters, master builders, and traders. Hardship had forced the farmers' sons to leave, as the meager land could not secure the livelihood of the large families. Especially between 1780 and 1840, magnificent houses with fresco decorations and foreign stylistic elements were built by the returning emigrants. Facade painting was an impressive means of demonstrating wealth. The motifs were often biblical scenes and elements of castle architecture. Tip!
