Burgruine Walchenstein

WALCHENSTEIN CASTLE RUINFor years, the Walchenstein castle ruin in the municipality of Iselsberg-Stronach was hidden by trees and bushes. Since a storm in autumn 2018, which swept away many trees, it is once again widely visible. The castle complex was built in 1274 by the Counts of Görz as part of the fortification ring around Schloss Bruck (Lienz). In the turmoil of war in the 13th and 15th centuries, Walchenstein Castle was tasked with blocking the Iselsberg Pass. The name Walchenstein probably goes back to a Friulian ministerialis and his descendants, who inhabited the castle on behalf of the Counts of Görz. In popular usage, our southern neighbors, the Romans (i.e. today the Italians), are referred to as Walsche or Welsche. Like many other castles in East Tyrol, Walchenstein Castle also lost its military significance and was sold to various owners over the centuries. The existing walls, secured in 1997/1998, are part of the former wall ring around the castle and are accessible to the public. Opening hours: Outdoor area - always accessible.
