Burgruine Rabenstein

Virgen, Tyrol

burgführung

Even today, Rabenstein still towers majestically as a ruin above Virgen. The castle was once the seat of the so-called "Pfleger" (administrators) of Virgen. The current ruin gives an idea of the size of the former castle. Finds from the Roman era indicate an early use of the castle hill. However, the defensive structure was built in the 12th century. As early as 1703, the castle was abandoned due to its dilapidation, and a later fire led to the complete decay of the complex. After extensive safety measures were carried out, the castle ruin is now a worthwhile hiking destination. From the church square, the road leads uphill to Mellitz. Before the Mellitzbrücke, turn left along the Mellitzbach into the Mellitzgraben. At the bench, turn left onto the secured path or walk from Mellitz along the asphalted road to the Eggerhof and from there across to the castle. You will be rewarded with a great panoramic view from the Iselschlucht to Matrei.
