The Landsee Castle Ruin in central Burgenland is one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe and a popular excursion destination in the middle of the Landseer Berge Nature Park. The origin of the Landsee Ruin cannot currently be determined, but it was first mentioned in 1158 in the tradition book of Göttweig Abbey. Children and parents can still recognize the imposing fortifications in this castle ruin today.The Landsee Ruin came into Hungarian hands in 1222, but soon changed owners again. The story of Gertrud von Weißpriach, who ruled there in the 16th century and was known for her violence, particularly fascinates children. With the help of the robber Franz Magusch, they primarily ambushed merchants on their journey through Burgenland. The defensive Landsee Castle had become a feared robber baron's nest.In 1612, the Landsee Ruin came into the hands of the Esterhazy family, who ensured the completion of the castle in 1666. A major fire in 1772 was the cause of the desolation of this castle. Today, families reach "Don Jon", the keep, via the large preserved entrance gate, over bridges and courtyards. From its viewing platform, children and parents have a magnificent panoramic view over central Burgenland to the Bucklige Welt.
