Burgruine Kammerstein

Kammern im Liesingtal, Styria

burgführung

Kammerstein Castle (today a castle ruin) was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century. A fortified complex already existed at this location, which was renewed and expanded by the Ehrenfelser family. The builders were very skilled, able to make good use of the limited space for the castle complex. Despite its small size, the entire complex appears relatively spacious. Since rocks rise on all four sides, an auxiliary wall was built on the north side for access. From an outer bailey, one reached the four-story gatehouse via a narrow path. Through three gates, one entered the castle and arrived in a steep and narrow inner courtyard. According to Piper's castle description, a bay window was still preserved here around 1900. Adjacent to this was the residential building, and to the south, several terraces were situated in front of the castle.
