Burgruine Hornstein

Hornstein, Burgenland

burgführung

The ruin is located on a wooded hill above the village and offers a beautiful view over the Leithagebirge and the surrounding landscape. The castle was probably built in the 12th or 13th century. It served as a border and administrative castle and played an important role in securing the region due to its strategically favorable location. Over the centuries, the castle changed owners several times and was rebuilt multiple times. During armed conflicts – especially in the Turkish Wars – the complex was damaged. Later, it increasingly lost its importance and gradually fell into disrepair. Finally, it was abandoned and remained as a ruin. Today, parts of the curtain wall, remnants of residential buildings, and traces of the former keep are still visible. The complex was originally surrounded by strong fortifications and followed the typical structure of a medieval hilltop castle. The castle ruin is now a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Information boards on site provide insights into the history of the castle. A visit is particularly appealing due to its quiet location amidst nature.
