Equipped with good footwear and a little bit of stamina, visitors can view the remains of Edenfest Castle above the Höllweg in Gruben within a few minutes. Originally called Lewenstein, Edenfest Castle is the first documented castle in Lungau around 1147. In 1467/70, it was referred to as "öde Vest" in a feudal letter, meaning it had already become a ruin and had lost its military significance. Archaeological excavations were carried out by the Salzburg state government in 1998-1999. Subsequently, the discovered wall remains, which no longer have any covered rooms, were secured.
