Burg St. Petersberg

Burg St. Petersberg

Silz, Tyrol

burgführung

The landmark is located west of the village of Silz on a hill. To the south of the castle is a pond. The towering five-story square keep is crowned with rectangular battlements. Outside the castle stands the so-called Schnitzer- or Faulturm, which was originally the seat of the burgraves. The castle was originally Welf property or an imperial fief and the center of the county in the Oberinntal. St. Petersberg was first mentioned in documents in 1090/97, and in the 12th and 13th centuries it was also called Neuhaus. Today, the castle itself houses the men's monastery and at the foot of the Petersberg the women's monastery. Since the castle is privately owned, it can only be viewed from the outside.
