What exciting stories these ancient walls could tell if they could speak? Burg Klammstein at the entrance of the valley is not only the oldest building in Gastein, but from here, the earliest settlement of the region also began. This is evidenced by numerous prehistoric finds. In 1272, a fortress was built and first mentioned in documents to protect the people. Since then, it has survived all sorts of historical upheavals. Many of these are vividly described in the castle's own museum. When exploring the roots of human life in Gastein, one cannot miss Burg Klammstein. Built in the 13th century, it was often a cause of disputes between the Lords of Goldegg, the ruling family, and the Salzburg archbishops as landowners. They were not always peaceful. Later, and until the 16th century, it housed the administration of the mines and the judiciary. Afterwards, the unused castle fell into ruin until renovation work began in the 1970s. Today, the main tower of Klammstein houses a museum that highlights the rich and long history of the castle. It still majestically overlooks the entrance to its valley, about 60 meters above the access road, welcoming visitors to Gastein.
