Bruderladenhaus - Stadtmuseum Schladming

The "Bruderladenhaus" (colloquially known as "Bruderhaus") is the only comparable and still preserved architectural monument in Styria. In the corresponding social environment, the industrial district located west of the town center, it was built in 1661 as a miners' social institution. It served as an acute hospital, retirement home, nursing home, and also as a care facility for widows and orphans. This "Bruderlade" (miners' welfare fund) was based on a very progressive idea: it served as social security in emergencies and was financed by employees and employers. The founding mission was fulfilled until approximately the end of the 19th century. After the dissolution of the last mining structures, the municipality bought the building, and from then on it served as a residential house. After the municipal council decided to give the house a lasting function by establishing the city museum, a general renovation was carried out from 1987 - 1989. The opening as a museum took place in July 1989. The historical character of the house has been excellently preserved, and a "Bruderladenzimmer" (miners' welfare fund room) has also remained almost unchanged, allowing visitors to "feel" the living conditions of past centuries - frugality, simplicity, and practicality. >> Experience the museum online <<
