Blut- oder Purpurbuche

Bad Hall, Upper Austria

naturführung

Name: Copper or Purple Beech Description: Planted around 1902 in the "Stifterpark". This copper beech in the park has a striking thickening on its trunk. Origin: Mutation of a common beech. Copper beeches have reddish leaves and have been known in Central Europe for over 400 years. The red coloration is due to the absence of an enzyme. In autumn, the leaves lose their red color and "turn green". Therefore, in autumn there is hardly any difference between a common beech and a copper beech. Copper beeches can grow up to 30 meters high and live for over 200 years.
