Bergkapelle Axamer Lizum

Bergkapelle Axamer Lizum

Axams, Tyrol

The chapel is located on the route of the Axamer Lizum circular hiking trail and was built in 1963. The idea for this chapel construction arose due to the development and transformation of the Alm (mountain pasture) area into the Axamer Lizum ski center. Specifically for hosting the alpine ski competitions during the 1964 Olympic Winter Games. The modern design of the Olympic Chapel was highly praised in the international trade press at the time, but was viewed rather skeptically by the locals. However, the initial mistrust quickly changed, and the chapel has since even gained the status of an important "landmark" in our Olympic ski and hiking area. The Bergkapelle Axamer Lizum is today an extremely popular place for reflection and spiritual rest for many hikers and visitors. At the same time, it is also the venue for solemn mountain masses and various family celebrations amidst the fantastic backdrop of the majestic Kalkkögel.
