Bergbaumuseum

Fohnsdorf, Styria

ausstellungmuseumstour

The history of mining in Fohnsdorf dates back to 1670. The Mining Museum exhibits historical documents and exhibits that provide a vivid overview of mining in general and Fohnsdorf mining in particular. On 1,000 m² of covered exhibition space and 5,000 m² of open-air grounds, visitors immerse themselves in the mysterious and dangerous world of miners. With a mining level of 1,130 m, Fohnsdorf was the deepest lignite mine in Europe and probably the whole world. The highlight of the museum is the 3,600 HP twin-double tandem steam engine of the main shaft and the 47 m high headframe. The competent guides, who are mostly former miners, make the guided tour in the museum informative and at the same time entertaining. Further information can be found on the homepage of the Mining Museum.
