Generous, rich in history and magnificent, it is considered the most beautiful Rococo church in the country and is, alongside the collegiate church of the Premonstratensian monastery, the second large church in Wilten – also home to the famous Wiltener Sängerknaben (Wilten Boys' Choir): the Wilten Basilica.Hundreds of years ago, Roman legionaries are said to have worshipped a unique image of Mary at its site, the former "Veldidena". Remains of an early Christian church from the 5th century found beneath the basilica support this beautiful legend.And one can clearly feel it: the early devotion to Mary continues to this day. For example, the image of the "Mother of God under the Four Pillars", a late Gothic sculpture under the ciborium altar, is still the destination of countless believers.Festive gold, delicate colors and elegant stuccoIn the mid-18th century, the historic church was completely renovated by the clergyman Franz de Paula Penz, an amateur builder. Bavarian artists as well as the fresco painter Mathias Günther and the stucco artists Feichtmayr from Wessobrunn significantly contributed to the distinctive beauty and elegance of the church and its rooms. Delicate colors, which celebrate gentle beauty in the light-filled church interior, perfected by elegantly light stucco in the form of rocaille, reflect the classical grace of Rococo and are a unique experience.For visits, which are always possible except during Holy Mass, a voluntary donation is requested.
