Basilika Mariapfarr

Mariapfarr, Salzburg

Originally built in Romanesque style, the church received its current form in the 15th century. Visitors can still admire the frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries as well as the artistically valuable miraculous image from the 15th century. From 2014 onwards, the interior of the church was extensively restored and redesigned. A new altar was installed, the neo-Gothic high altar was restored to its condition before the 1947 renovation, and the wrought iron grille from 1731 was moved a few meters back. On April 5, 2018, Pope Francis elevated the pilgrimage church to Basilica minor by decree. The Joseph Mohr Platz with the Silent Night Fountain, in honor of the lyricist who wrote the text of the world-famous Christmas carol "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!" in Mariapfarr in 1816, is also worth seeing.
