Basilika am Weizberg

From simple and romantic to baroque basilica The Basilica minor in Weiz. The first church on Weizberg was built as early as the 11th century. However, this simple Romanesque basilica was replaced by a baroque basilica in the 18th century. In January 2018, it was designated a Basilica minor, making it the fifth church in the area of the Diocese of Graz-Seckau.A church with special features. The baroque church building, 53.58 m long, is adorned inside with frescoes by Josef Adam Ritter von Mölck, and on the ceiling of the house of God, paintings of the five great Marian feasts of the church year can be seen. The high altar, in the center of which is a Pietá depiction, is a work by the renowned sculptor Veit Königer.Frescoes, onion domes, and tent roofs. Particularly striking on the exterior are the two approximately 44 m high towers of the basilica. Originally, these were fitted with onion domes, entirely in keeping with the baroque architectural style. However, these were destroyed in a fire and, due to lack of funds, replaced by simple tent roofs, which have now become a special feature of the church.
