Barbara Sicharter (1829 - 1905) is the founder of the Vorau Sisters of Mary. She grew up on the "Kroneggerhof" in Wenigzell, as the third of seven children. After the death of her mother (1861), the idea matured in her to dedicate herself to God and to help people. In 1865, Barbara Sicharter was consecrated, and together with three other women, she began a monastic life. She dedicated herself to hospital, home, and poor nursing care. Barbara acquired a house in Vorau, which she continued to operate as a hospital. Later, the house was expanded and renamed a hospital. Thus, Barbara Sicharter became a convent and hospital founder. This house is today the Marienkrankenhaus Vorau.
