Bahnzeit/Pferdeeisenbahnmuseum der Südstrecke

Wels, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

The Bahnzeit/Pferdeeisenbahnmuseum der Südstrecke Linz-Wels-Gmunden depicts the history of the historic rail network with a gauge of 1106 mm south of the Danube, especially the revitalization efforts since 1995. This southern route began with the passenger boarding station in the Basdargarten in Linz (now OÖ. Landesmuseum) and led via Neubau, Wels and Alt-Lambach (Stadl-Paura) to Gmunden. In Wels, the Maxlhaid freight yard served freight traffic. In 1852, 170,877 people frequented the boarding station on Vorstadtplatz (Stelzhamerstraße 11); the operating building (Bahnhofstraße 6) was located in front of it. In Wels, nine buildings of the K.K. Prov. Erste Eisenbahngesellschaft have survived to date, the largest concentration of this kind along the entire Budweis-Gmunden route. The tradition is maintained by the Pferdeeisenbahnwirte and the Pferdeeisenbahn Wels-Maxlhaid association, which vividly presents the history of the Linz-Gmunden southern route in an annex to the former freight station. An attraction in the Pferdeeisenbahnmuseum Bahnzeit is a reconstructed salt wagon.
