The hike through the Bärenschützklamm starts in Mixnitz. Visitor parking and bus parking (Mixnitz train station) are available. From the village of Mixnitz, it's about a 1.5-hour walk to the official gorge entrance (ticket booth). After that, the Bärenschützklamm begins with its spectacular footbridges, ladders, and passages through the rocks. Stair length: 1.4 km Altitude difference: approx. 700 m (from Bräunermühle to GH Guter Hirte) with 168 bridges and ladders The gorge is very demanding, so it is not possible to traverse it with dogs and small children. There are several hiking variations for the Bärenschützklamm: through the Bärenschützklamm up to "Zum guten Hirten" and down the Prügelweg back to the Mixnitz parking lot (approx. 4.5 hours) through the Bärenschützklamm, up to Schüsserlbrunn, back to "Zum guten Hirten" and via the Prügelweg back to the Mixnitz parking lot (approx. 6 hours) through the Bärenschützklamm to Teichalm: up the Bärenschützklamm to "Zum Guten Hirten" and along the Mixnitzbach to Teichalm, the same way back to the Mixnitz parking lot or pick-up from Teichalm or by taxi back to Mixnitz. (approx. 4 hours without return journey) From Hochlantsch down to Breitenau: Ascent via the Bärenschützklamm to the "Steirischer Jockl" (or even up to the Hochlantsch summit) and then the descent down to Breitenau (approx. 6 or 7 hours) Attention: The Bärenschützklamm is open daily during regular operation from May 1st to October 31st. In case of heavy rain, storm, hail, or thunderstorms, a temporary closure for safety reasons is possible. During the winter months, the gorge is closed, entry is forbidden and life-threatening! The shuttle runs from Thursday to Sunday every half hour: 08:30 to 12:30 13:30 to 18:00 ATTENTION: The Bärli-Express will take a break from June 25th to July 1st, 2026. Next trip from July 2nd. Fares: One-way trip: €3 Round trip: €5 Tickets are available directly from the shuttle on site. Reservations are not possible.
