Birgitz, Tyrol
The "Hohe Birga" excavation site in Birgitz is the only open-air archaeological site in the immediate vicinity of Innsbruck. It is approx. 500 m as the crow flies from the center of Birgitz and can be reached on foot in 20 minutes.Over 2000 years ago, a Raetian settlement was located on the steeply sloping hill, which was well protected against mudslides and floods as well as against potential human enemies. The Raetians inhabited the Alpine region from the end of the 6th century BC, from the Lower Engadine in the west to the Virgental in the east and south to Lake Garda. In 15 BC, the Romans began their campaign to conquer the Alps. In the course of the military occupation of what is now North Tyrol, the settlement on the "Hohe Birga" was probably also burned down. The excavations also yielded numerous finds, e.g. ceramic vessels, but also jewelry and tools made of metal and objects made of glass and bone, and can be viewed in the Raetian Museum directly at the Birgitz municipal office.Raetian Museum opening hours:Friday: 17:00h - 19:00hSaturday: 15:00h - 18:00hSunday: 16:00h - 18:00hFree audio guide for smartphone/iPhone"Hohe Birga - An Archaeological Journey into the Iron Age"
