Vorau Abbey presents itself as a unified Baroque abbey, where the more than 800-year tradition of monastic life attempts to connect with the demands of the present in church and world. The Vorau Abbey Church is one of the most magnificent Baroque churches in Styria due to its lavish abundance of frescoes, the opulent gilding of all wooden sculptures, and especially the splendid furnishings of the high altar. This mighty hall with a double ring of chapels was rebuilt from scratch by Provost Matthias Singer after the demolition of the old Gothic basilica, according to plans by Domenico Sciassia, while retaining the towers, from 1660-1662. The imposing high altar, built in 1704 after an ingenious design by Matthias Steindl, is the artistic highlight of the church. The much-admired pulpit, completed in 1706, also originates from him.
