Arzberg Gemeinde

Passail, Styria

wandern

The place name Arzberg is derived from the mining of lead ores in the village; the first documented mention was found in the year 1242. With the beginning of mining, the first church in Arzberg was also built - presumably by miners. Until 1927, everything revolved around the extraction of silver, lead, and zinc, after which operations ceased due to insufficient yield. Parts of the mine are still accessible today and can be explored during a guided tour. Yet another part of the adit was converted and now serves as a ripening cellar for the award-winning Stollenkäse (mine cheese) made with milk from the region. The region is also wonderful for hiking, especially a circular walk through the Raabklamm gorge is particularly worth seeing.
