Archäologie.Wander.Weg Schattendorf

Schattendorf, Burgenland

The hike through the millennia begins in front of the Schuh-Mühle in Schattendorf. There, next to the Tauscherbach, a bloomery furnace was built and iron was produced for the first time in 2000 years. The approximately 7 km long path leads via the Hauptstraße, to the Hadspitzwald, over the Krippelberg back towards the village and Schuh-Mühle. The first station leads to the settlement site of the Neolithic inhabitants of Schattendorf. A plaque in front of the excavation site provides insight into life in the Stone Age, what tools were used, and how the houses of that time were built. The route continues north to the second station, into the "Hadspitzwald" to the "7 Hügeln" (7 Hills), as they are popularly called. Shortly before entering the forest, a plaque awaits with a brief introduction to the burial customs and beliefs of people in the early Iron Age, as well as a plan of the tumulus field. Let yourself be enchanted by the gently rolling landscape until the next station to the north and imagine life in past times in this area. For the third station, a leap in time of over two millennia is necessary. Schattendorf is known to many people in connection with the "Schüsse von Schattendorf" (Schattendorf shootings) in 1927. The "Grimmingkreuz" rest stop is excellent for a small break with a possible wine tasting. (Pre-order at the Schuh-Mühle) As an above-ground visible archaeological monument, a tank ditch from the Second World War still cuts through the landscape in the northwestern part of the municipality. The "Ostwall" (East Wall) continues into the municipality of Baumgarten. All information about its function, as with the other stations, is visible on a plaque. On the way back east on the Kräftenweg, looking towards the train station, you will see a slight elevation parallel above the Bahnstraße. This path may have already been used by the Romans for trade. Numerous Roman archaeological sites are found along this path. One of them, slightly southeast of the Schattendorf-Baumgarten train station, is a "Villa Rustica". The Roman tombstones in the church wall of Schattendorf probably also belong to this Roman settlement. On the way back, visit the exhibition "8000 Jahre Schattendorf" (8000 Years of Schattendorf) in the Schuh-Mühle. There, finds from all previously visited sites are exhibited and described. In addition to cremated remains deposited in a later decayed wooden box, numerous pottery shards were found. The graves can be assigned to the period from 700 to 600 BC. In 1924, archaeologist Dr. Friedrich Hautmann carried out two further excavations. From the La Tène period come two Celtic spearheads and a sword from the Eglseeäcker, as well as a Celtic secondary burial in a tumulus in the Hadspitzwald and a woman's grave with a neck ring and bracelet (in the Natural History Museum in Vienna).
