Apothekenmuseum

Mauthausen, Upper Austria

ausstellungmuseumstour

The museum, located on the first floor of Pragstein Castle, invites visitors to a tour through five clearly themed rooms that provide a historical insight into the work of pharmacists. The foundation of the museum is the pharmaceutical history collection of the Aichberger pharmacist family. The first room is dedicated to the history of pharmacy, which is illustrated with various documents. Among other things, an almost completely preserved collection of Austrian pharmacopoeias from the end of the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century can be seen. Three other rooms show the pharmacy as a workplace: In the laboratory, a large part of the medicines were produced by the pharmacists themselves and checked for their identity and purity until well into the 19th century. The equipment used for distilling, melting, drying and cooling is the focus of attention: microscopes, analytical balances and various measuring devices. The corresponding recipes for preparation were recorded in the pharmacopoeias shown. Autobahn exit Enns, then towards Mauthausen
