Whoever wants to take in the Styrian hill country with one glance must go high up – ideally into the sky. Drifting into the firmament in a hot air balloon opens up fascinating views and an incomparable panorama of the sea of a thousand hills. Topography and stable weather conditions make Eastern Styria the center for ballooning. Elisabeth Kindermann-Schön, head of A-Z Ballonfahrten Kindermann-Schön KG in Bad Waltersdorf, has been captivated by the sky for thirty years. She prefers to view the world from a bird's-eye perspective. "No two trips are alike; only the gods know the destination," says Kindermann-Schön. The direction in ballooning is determined solely by the wind; the balloon can only be steered in terms of altitude. From just above the treetops to 3,000 meters from the ground, the colorful giant spheres glide over the gentle hills. Taking off from the ground is one of humanity's greatest dreams. In 1783, the Montgolfier brothers' first manned balloon launched into the sky. The fact that balloons "fahren" (drive/ride) and not "fliegen" (fly) in German usage is explained by the derivation of the term "fahren" from seafaring. A balloon "fährt" (rides) with the wind in the sky, like a ship "fährt" (sails) with the wind on the ocean. "It's much more beautiful in the air than on the ground," Kindermann-Schön is convinced. In the silence of the sky, everyday things lose their importance, and an indescribable feeling of freedom fills every fiber of the body. Passenger rides with A-Z Ballonfahrten Kindermann-Schön KG in Bad Waltersdorf make it possible to experience this heavenly happiness at any time of year and enjoy the beauties of Eastern Styria from lofty heights.
