Europe's "oldest" oak The "dicke Oachn" (thick oak), as people call what is perhaps Europe's oldest oak, has about 1,000 years under its belt. One has to imagine all that has happened during this time, while it grew towards the sky of Bierbaum, reached thirty meters in height and developed a trunk diameter of 2.5 meters. Its beginning fell in the time of Charlemagne; when Columbus discovered America, it was already 700 years old. Many generations of children played in its shade, grew older, celebrated festivals, and passed away. In the 70s of the last century, it became critical for the oak for the first time. After a lightning strike, concrete was carelessly poured into the hollow trunk – soon real tree doctors had to come and prove their skills on it. Fortunately, it could be saved, so that many more people can rest under it, listen to its silence, and absorb some of its tranquility. Fascinating, besides the thought of the duration of its existence, is also the fact that all fifty generations to whom the tree belonged over the course of 1,000 years have refrained from using its wood, letting it live... A beautiful natural monument and as such also honored by the state of Styria.
